"Thank God, it's not Instagram hyped." That was our first thought when we arrived at Black Canyon of the Gunnison during our mid-April visit. The snow was melting, conditions were favorable, and the crowds were practically nonexistent.
Getting There & Lodging
We stayed in Montrose, approximately 20 minutes from the visitor center. The town offers restaurants, grocery stores, and clothing shops for any last-minute gear needs. One thing we learned the hard way — there are no hiking pole rental facilities nearby, so we had to purchase a $30 pair that we couldn't transport home via plane.
The Canyon Hike: Gunnison Route
The main event was the canyon hike via the Gunnison Route, which required approximately 4 hours total, including rest time. This is not a casual stroll.
**What you need to know:** - A wilderness permit is required (obtainable at the visitor center from 9am to 4pm, or self-issued beforehand) - The terrain is strenuous — we're talking 60-degree slopes combined with loose rock scrambling - It's a round-trip climb, so you need to save energy for the return ascent - Bring plenty of water and snacks
The descent into the canyon feels like entering another world. The Gunnison River roars at the bottom, and the sheer walls tower 2,000 feet above you. It's simultaneously humbling and exhilarating.
Rim Drive Sightseeing
If the canyon hike sounds too intense, the rim drive provides an excellent overview of the park. Most overlooks feature similar vistas of the dramatic canyon, but each offers a slightly different perspective. The overlooks are accessible with short walks, all under one mile.
Sunset at Sunset Point
We saved the best for last. The Sunset Point overlook delivered a spectacular sunset viewing experience. The canyon walls caught the fading light, turning from black to deep purple to gold. It was one of the most memorable sunsets we've ever witnessed.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison may not have the Instagram clout of places like Arches or Zion, but that's exactly what makes it special. Sometimes the best national parks are the ones that haven't gone viral yet.
